Data routes gain weight in data center infrastructure

New points of presence in the São Paulo - Santos axis reinforce connections between data centers, national networks, and international systems
The topic will be addressed during the first edition of Data Center World Brasil, from October 6 to 8, at the São Paulo Expo

São Paulo, September 2026 – The paths traveled by data between processing centers, telecommunications networks, and international connections are gaining importance in Brazilian digital infrastructure. Points of presence, terrestrial networks, submarine systems, and traffic exchange points form a mesh responsible for connecting data centers to different networks and ensuring large volumes of information reach their destination.

A recent movement by Uruguayan company Antel draws attention to this infrastructure. The company is preparing to expand its network in Brazil and, in August, sent representatives to São Paulo and Santos to survey installations and connections at various points of presence, known as PoPs. The initiative is part of the operator's network expansion project in the country, according to a resolution published by Antel itself.

The São Paulo–Santos axis brings together important components of this mesh. Santos is the arrival point for submarine systems connecting Brazil to other countries, while São Paulo concentrates networks and interconnection environments responsible for traffic exchange between different internet participants.

Antel maintains infrastructure linked to two submarine systems passing through Santos. The Tannat connects Brazil to Uruguay and extends to Argentina. Meanwhile, the Monet links Santos to Boca Raton, in the United States. The company's 2025 financial documents record assets related to both systems and to the national and international transmission infrastructure of the Brazilian operation.

In the case of Tannat, built by Antel in partnership with Google, the link between Maldonado, Uruguay, and Santos later gained an extension to Las Toninas, Argentina. The system expanded the international connection capacity of the region and created a direct route between these markets.

São Paulo completes this path with another piece of digital infrastructure. Antel integrates with IX.br São Paulo, a traffic exchange point that allows direct interconnection between different networks. Structures of this type enable participants to exchange traffic with each other and create more efficient paths for data circulation.

The combination of submarine cables, terrestrial networks, points of presence, and interconnection environments shows that the infrastructure required for a data center goes beyond the limits of the facilities where the servers are located. The performance of digital services also depends on the available routes to transport information between data centers, operators, content platforms, cloud services, and users.

The relationship between data centers and telecommunications will be among the topics of the first edition of Data Center World Brasil, which will be held from October 6 to 8 at the São Paulo Expo, simultaneously with Futurecom, the main connectivity and innovation event in Latin America. The joint hosting brings the environments responsible for data processing and storage closer to the networks that enable their circulation.

“A data center does not operate in isolation. Data needs to enter, exit, and circulate between different networks. Fiber, points of presence, interconnection, and access to different national and international routes are part of this infrastructure. Having diversified paths for traffic gains importance as the number of digital services relying on these environments increases,” says Leonardo Benedicto, director of Data Center World Brasil.
