AI accelerates adoption of liquid cooling in data centers

Technology is expected to reach 53% of AI chips in 2026 due to higher processing concentration and the need to dissipate heat from equipment

São Paulo, September 2026 – Artificial intelligence is also changing the physical infrastructure of data centers. With more processing capacity concentrated in smaller spaces, the amount of heat produced by equipment is growing, and with it, the need for new cooling solutions.

The shift can be observed in rack density. While traditional structures generally operate in the 5 kW to 15 kW per rack range, configurations developed for advanced artificial intelligence applications can already exceed 100 kW. NVIDIA’s DGX GB200, for example, has an approximate power consumption of 120 kW per rack. This difference demands new solutions for the thermal systems of facilities.

The topic will be among the discussions at Data Center World Brasil. On October 8, at 2:00 PM, the panel “AI-ready data centers: density, power, and new infrastructure requirements” will discuss how the advancement of artificial intelligence is changing the requirements for data center infrastructure. Participating are Allan Siriani, head of CIAg; Alex Santiago, Data Center manager at Sicoob; Luis Cuevas, director of Secure Power and Data Center Business at Schneider Electric; Luis Tossi, vice president of ABDC; and Carlos Olinto, director of Essencial Energia.

The debate will address the evolution of rack density, the transition from air cooling to liquid cooling, the limits of existing structures, and the adaptations needed to support higher-density computational workloads.

For decades, air cooling predominated in data centers. However, the concentration of processing in GPUs and other accelerators used by AI applications expands the space for liquid cooling systems, which are capable of removing heat directly from the highest-power components.

The movement has gained momentum. A survey by TrendForce estimates that the share of liquid cooling in artificial intelligence chips is expected to reach 53% in 2026, up from approximately 33% in 2025. Among the factors pointed out by the consultancy are the increased density of equipment and the adoption of the technology by major cloud providers.

The transition does not mean the disappearance of air cooling. One of the issues faced by the sector is how to adapt existing data centers to accommodate higher-density loads. Depending on the installation's characteristics, hybrid systems can combine different cooling technologies, allowing the incorporation of new equipment without completely replacing the infrastructure.

“With artificial intelligence, the discussion about computational capacity has come to involve even more directly the infrastructure that sustains this processing. Cooling and density must be considered from the initial design to the adaptation of existing facilities. It is a transformation that reaches the entire operation of data centers,” says Leonardo Benedicto, director of Data Center World Brasil.

The first edition of Data Center World Brasil will be held from October 6 to 8 at the São Paulo Expo, in São Paulo, simultaneously with Futurecom, one of the main connectivity and innovation events in Latin America. Promoted by Informa Markets, both events will gather companies, specialists, and leaders to discuss advancements in digital infrastructure and their impacts on the economy and different productive sectors.
